No, I don't take insurance. Here's why.
*You CAN use HSA/FSA to cover my services and you have other options detailed below if you have out-of-network insurance benefits.
The decision not to accept insurance is a difficult one. After all, I believe everyone should have access to quality mental healthcare. Let me explain why this decision benefits you.
The Flaws in For-Profit Health Insurance
Insurance companies can create harmful interruptions or delay to your mental healthcare. Is that really a surprise at this point? Insurance companies exist to make a profit, not to get to know you as a unique individual and ensure you get the best possible treatment.
Privacy and Autonomy Protection
We continue to see the danger of sharing health information with state and federal authorities, especially for people of color and members of the LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent communities (See National Library of Medicine & Missouri Independent for just a couple of the many examples). I prefer to prioritize the decisions you and I make together regarding any diagnoses and treatment plans.
Cutting Edge Treatment Tailored to You
Without the limitations and interruptions of insurance, I can create a unique blend of treatment approaches to best suit you and your needs and personality. Your values should shape your journey to mental wellness, NOT those of a company that doesn't know you.
More Focused Attention
By setting my own rate, I can offer more time and energy to each of my clients. It's important to this work that your details are not lost to an over-scheduled provider. Many practitioners who take insurance are forced to see way more clients per day/week, which can take away from your care. This work is my passion. Why would I want to provide sub-par treatment by stretching myself too thin?

Insurance
I am not in-network with any insurance providers. This gives me the freedom to customize your treatment to your needs instead of being dictated by your insurance company.
You can use FSA or HSA to pay for my services. Many of my clients also use out-of-network insurance benefits to receive partial or full reimbursement for their treatment with me. Reimbursement varies from plan to plan.
Mentaya offers excellent help with navigating this process. You can read about their services and FAQ here. The app Reimbursify can also be helpful.
If you’re more of a do-it-yourself type:
- Check your insurance company’s website for your “Summary of Benefits.” You’re looking for mental health or behavioral health benefits.
- Call your insurance company to verify your benefits. Often, the number is listed on the back of your insurance card.
Questions to ask your insurance company:
- What is my out-of-network deductible for outpatient mental health? Is this separate from my in-network deductible?
- How much of my deductible has been met this year?
- What is my out-of-network coinsurance for outpatient mental health? At what rate will I be reimbursed for out-of-network services?
- Do I need a referral from an in-network provider to see someone out-of-network?
- How do I submit my superbill?
After verifying your benefits:
You must pay for your sessions at the time of service. I will provide you with monthly or quarterly (your choice) forms via email. These forms are called superbills. You’ll submit these following the instructions given to you by your insurance company, and (if you qualify) receive payment from them.
