We live in a society that tells us there's only one acceptable way to be. To fit in you must be thin, you must be white, you must be neurotypical, you must follow "christian" ideals, you must be able-bodied, you must be straight and cis-gender.......

Fuck that.

The more they try to control and limit us, the more I will use my power and privilege to protect my fellow Misfits. No matter who you are: I know you are not safe everywhere right now, but you are safe in my office.

About Lori and Misfits KC

Hey! My name is Lori Alvarez, I am a licensed therapist and a Misfit.

I am always working on embracing my Latina heritage and my ADHD. I firmly believe in the principles of body neutrality and sex positivity. Everyone has a right to a healthy relationship with one’s body and sexuality. My approach to therapy combines sarcasm, genuine warmth, and collaborative conversation. I love how much I learn from my clients when they share their interests!

Outside of my work, I find joy in live music, my two dogs and cat, and video games with my partner. Balancing my personal experiences with my professional expertise, I hope to inspire others to embrace their uniqueness and find joy in their lives.

Why the birds, Lori?

That's a fair question. I really hope you're not afraid of birds. I know many people are. If you are....sorry! Scroll away fast!

A dear friend of mine once gave me a set of oracle cards that were all different birds. I had never given much thought to birds, honestly, and I had never owned a set of oracle or tarot cards. This deck has taught me a lot!

There are so many types of birds and they have wildly different appearances, behaviors, needs, etc. Ya know....kinda like humans!

If someone said, "That yellow warbler needs to dye its feathers pink and act more like a proper roseate spoonbill," I think most people would furrow their brow and correct that very misguided person.

Why should humans be treated any differently?
